Lawsuit filed by Cards Against Humanity against SpaceX for alleged trespassing in Texas

The maker of the popular party game Cards Against Humanity is accusing Elon Musk’s SpaceX of trespassing on and damaging a plot of vacant land the company owns in Texas.

In a lawsuit filed this week at a Texas court, Cards Against Humanity alleges SpaceX has essentially treated the game company’s property — located in Cameron County — as its own for at least the past six months.

The lawsuit said SpaceX, which had previously acquired other plots of land near the property, has placed construction materials, such as gravel, and other debris on the land without asking for permission to do so.

SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Cards Against Humanity, which is headquartered in Chicago, had purchased the plot of land in 2017 as part of what it said was a stunt to oppose former president Donald Trump’s efforts to build a border wall.

The company said 150,000 people had each contributed $15 towards the effort.

Over the years, Cards Against Humanity says the land has been maintained in its natural state. It also says it contained a “no trespassing” sign to warn people they were about to step on private property.

The company is asking for $15 million in damages, which it says includes a loss of vegetation on the land.

Cards Against Humanity, the popular party game known for its dark humor and irreverent content, has found itself in the midst of a legal battle with aerospace company SpaceX. The lawsuit, filed by Cards Against Humanity in a Texas court, alleges that SpaceX trespassed on their property in order to conduct testing for their Starship rocket.

The incident in question reportedly took place at the Boca Chica launch site in South Texas, where SpaceX has been conducting tests and launches for their Starship rocket. According to the lawsuit, SpaceX employees entered onto Cards Against Humanity’s property without permission in order to set up equipment and conduct testing for the rocket.

Cards Against Humanity claims that SpaceX’s actions were a violation of their property rights and caused damage to their land. The lawsuit seeks damages for trespassing, as well as an injunction to prevent SpaceX from entering onto their property in the future without permission.

SpaceX has not yet publicly commented on the lawsuit, but they have previously faced criticism for their operations at the Boca Chica launch site. Local residents have raised concerns about noise, environmental impact, and disruption to their daily lives as a result of SpaceX’s activities in the area.

This lawsuit highlights the complex legal issues that can arise when private companies operate in close proximity to each other, especially in remote or rural areas like Boca Chica. It also raises questions about property rights and the responsibilities of companies like SpaceX when it comes to respecting the boundaries of neighboring landowners.

As the legal battle between Cards Against Humanity and SpaceX unfolds, it will be interesting to see how the court rules on the issue of trespassing and what implications it may have for future interactions between private companies operating in close proximity to each other. In the meantime, both parties will have to navigate the legal process and work towards a resolution that satisfies all parties involved.
