Abortion has been a contentious issue in American politics for decades, with both sides of the debate fiercely advocating for their beliefs. In recent years, the issue has become even more polarizing, with many states passing restrictive abortion laws and the Supreme Court poised to potentially overturn Roe v. Wade.

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, abortion rights groups are endorsing President Joe Biden and urging Democrats to make the issue a central focus of their campaign.

The National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) endorsed Biden in the 2020 election, citing his commitment to protecting reproductive rights. “Joe Biden is a leader who has always stood with women and families, and he will continue to do so as president,” said NARAL President Ilyse Hogue.

Other abortion rights groups, such as Planned Parenthood and Emily’s List, have also endorsed Biden and are working to mobilize voters around the issue.

“Abortion rights are under attack like never before,” said Alexis McGill Johnson, president of Planned Parenthood. “We need a president who will stand up for reproductive rights and health care access for all.”

Biden has been a vocal supporter of abortion rights throughout his political career. He has promised to codify Roe v. Wade into law, expand access to contraception, and repeal the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits federal funding for abortion services.

In contrast, former President Donald Trump and many Republicans have pushed for more restrictive abortion laws and have appointed conservative judges who could potentially overturn Roe v. Wade.

The issue of abortion is likely to be a major focus of the 2024 election, particularly if the Supreme Court does overturn Roe v. Wade. Many states have already passed laws that would ban or severely restrict abortion if the landmark case is overturned.

Democrats are hoping that by making abortion rights a central issue of their campaign, they can energize their base and win over moderate voters who support reproductive rights.

However, some Democrats are concerned that focusing too much on abortion could alienate voters who are more moderate or conservative on the issue. They argue that Democrats should focus on other issues, such as healthcare and the economy, which are more likely to resonate with a broader range of voters.

Despite these concerns, abortion rights groups are determined to make reproductive rights a top priority in the 2024 election. They believe that the stakes are too high to remain silent on the issue.

“Abortion is a fundamental right that must be protected,” said Hogue. “We cannot afford to let anti-choice politicians take us back to a time when women had to risk their lives to access safe and legal abortion.”
