Cleveland Cavaliers Owner's Son, Nick Gilbert, Passes Away at Age 26

The Cleveland Cavaliers community is mourning the loss of Nick Gilbert, the son of team owner Dan Gilbert, who passed away on February 21, 2021, at the age of 26. Nick was known for his infectious personality and positive attitude, and his passing has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him.

Nick was born with a rare genetic disorder called Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), which causes tumors to grow on nerve tissue throughout the body. Despite his health challenges, Nick never let his condition define him. He was a beloved member of the Cavaliers organization and a fan favorite, known for his enthusiastic personality and signature bowtie.

Nick gained national attention in 2011 when he represented the Cavaliers at the NBA draft lottery. The team had a 2.8% chance of securing the first overall pick, but Nick’s lucky bowtie and positive energy helped them beat the odds and secure the top spot. The Cavaliers used that pick to select Kyrie Irving, who went on to become a six-time All-Star and an NBA champion.

Nick’s positive attitude and resilience in the face of adversity inspired many people, both within and outside of the Cavaliers community. He was an advocate for those with NF1 and worked to raise awareness and funds for research into the disorder. In 2018, he received the Courage Award from the Children’s Tumor Foundation for his efforts.

Following Nick’s passing, tributes poured in from across the NBA community. Cavaliers players, coaches, and staff expressed their condolences and shared memories of Nick’s infectious spirit. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also released a statement, saying, “Nick’s courageous battle with NF1 inspired all of us, and we are heartbroken by his passing.”

Nick’s passing is a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the positive impact he had on the world. The Cavaliers community will continue to honor Nick’s memory and keep his spirit alive.
