Man responsible for NYC truck terror attack sentenced to 8 consecutive life terms in prison

On October 31, 2017, a man named Sayfullo Saipov drove a rented truck onto a bike path in Lower Manhattan, killing eight people and injuring 12 others. The attack was the deadliest terrorist incident in New York City since the September 11 attacks in 2001.

On Tuesday, April 24, 2018, Saipov was sentenced to eight consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of parole. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Vernon S. Broderick, who called Saipov’s actions “barbaric and heinous.”

Saipov, a 30-year-old Uzbek national, had been living in the United States since 2010. He had worked as a truck driver and had been planning the attack for several weeks before carrying it out. He told investigators that he was inspired by ISIS propaganda videos and had chosen Halloween as the date of the attack because he believed there would be more people on the streets.

During his trial, Saipov showed no remorse for his actions and even asked the judge to allow him to display an ISIS flag in his hospital room. He also interrupted the proceedings several times to proclaim his loyalty to the terrorist group.

The sentencing of Saipov has been seen as a victory for law enforcement officials and a message to would-be terrorists that they will be held accountable for their actions. In a statement following the sentencing, U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman said, “Today’s sentence is the just and appropriate punishment for Saipov’s heinous and cowardly attack on innocent civilians in Lower Manhattan.”

The families of Saipov’s victims were also present in court for the sentencing. They spoke about the impact that the attack had on their lives and the pain that they continue to feel. One woman, whose son was killed in the attack, said, “I will never forgive you for what you did to my son. You are a monster.”

Saipov’s sentencing comes at a time when terrorist attacks are becoming more frequent around the world. In the United States, there have been several high-profile attacks in recent years, including the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 and the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando in 2016.

While the sentencing of Saipov will not bring back the lives that were lost in the attack, it does send a message that terrorism will not be tolerated in the United States. It also serves as a reminder that the fight against terrorism is ongoing and that law enforcement officials must remain vigilant in their efforts to prevent future attacks.
