Police charge man for giving child fireworks that caused fire in 2 homes

LEVITTOWN, N.Y. — A New York man was charged with arson after giving an 11-year-old child fireworks that set a shed and two homes on fire on Independence Day, police said.

The Nassau County Police Department on Long Island said Karamjit Singh, 33, told the child to light the fireworks Thursday morning outside his home in Levittown, but they malfunctioned and set a shed on fire. The blaze then spread to Singh’s home and a neighboring house, causing extensive damage.

No injuries were reported. Singh was arrested without incident and the child was released to a family member, police said.

Court records show Singh is being represented by the Nassau County legal aid office. A message seeking comment was left there on Sunday. Singh is charged with arson, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child, among other charges.

A man has been charged by police for giving a child fireworks that ultimately caused a fire in two homes. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of fireworks and the importance of responsible behavior when handling them.

The incident occurred in a residential neighborhood where a man reportedly gave a child fireworks to play with. The child, unaware of the potential dangers, lit the fireworks near two homes, resulting in a fire that quickly spread and caused significant damage to both properties.

Police have charged the man with reckless endangerment and other related offenses. This serves as a clear example of the legal consequences that can arise from irresponsible behavior involving fireworks.

Fireworks are not toys and should only be handled by trained professionals or responsible adults. Improper use of fireworks can lead to serious injuries, property damage, and even death. It is crucial for individuals to understand the risks associated with fireworks and to follow safety guidelines when using them.

In addition to legal consequences, incidents like this can also have a lasting impact on the community. Fires caused by fireworks can put lives at risk, displace families from their homes, and cause significant financial burden for those affected.

As we approach holidays and celebrations where fireworks are commonly used, it is important for individuals to prioritize safety and responsibility. This includes following local laws and regulations regarding fireworks, using them in designated areas, and never giving them to children.

By taking these precautions and being mindful of the potential dangers, we can prevent incidents like the one that occurred in this neighborhood. Let this serve as a reminder to always handle fireworks with care and respect for the safety of ourselves and those around us.
