Russian President Vladimir Putin recently suggested the possibility of deploying strategic nuclear weapons in Belarus, a move that has raised concerns among neighboring countries and the international community.
The idea was first mentioned during a joint press conference with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in December 2019. Putin stated that Russia was ready to support Belarus in strengthening its defense capabilities, including the deployment of Russian military equipment and weapons on Belarusian territory.
While Putin did not explicitly mention nuclear weapons, his comments were widely interpreted as a veiled threat to NATO and other Western countries. The deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus would give Russia a strategic advantage in the region, as it would be able to strike targets in Europe with greater ease.
The suggestion has been met with strong opposition from neighboring countries, particularly Poland and Lithuania. Both countries have expressed concern over the potential deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus, citing the risk of a nuclear accident or attack.

Belarus has yet to officially respond to Putin’s suggestion, but Lukashenko has previously expressed his support for closer military cooperation with Russia. In recent years, Belarus has strengthened its ties with Moscow, signing a number of military agreements and participating in joint military exercises.
The possibility of nuclear weapons being deployed in Belarus is just one example of the growing tensions between Russia and the West. The two sides have been at odds over a number of issues, including Russia’s annexation of Crimea, its involvement in the conflict in Syria, and allegations of interference in Western elections.
